Uptown Press. An indie publisher based in NYC

Uptown Press grew from one simple thought: a story has weight when the writer has space to tell it in their own way. The imprint centers writers from backgrounds that often sit at the edge of commercial lists, for example diaspora communities, queer writers, writers from working class lives and writers whose stories hold grief, care work, migration or street corners in their bones. In short: Stories written by real people, stories that deserve a seat at the table. Publishing those stories is our mission.

Each book grows out of a close, transparent collaboration. The press brings editorial skill, production support and calm structure. The writer keeps the voice, the texture and the final say on what feels true on the page.

Our Services for Authors

For writers with a finished manuscript who need the final steps.

Layout for print and ebook, cover that reflects the book’s mood, ISBN setup, IngramSpark and ebook upload, basic metadata and one proof check. You keep all royalties.

For writers who want the text refined before release.

Line and style edit, suggestions for clarity, flow and tone, then full layout, cover design, ISBNs, uploads and proof check. You keep all royalties.

For writers who want support from early draft to finished book.

Structural analysis, scene and pacing notes, a revision roadmap, follow up check, line and style edit, then full production. You keep all royalties or choose a hybrid plan.

What we publish

What belongs at Uptown Press

The list is small and focused. Every project leans on character, place and emotional honesty. What we are looking for:

  • character driven fiction with strong inner arcs

  • intimate or emotionally charged narratives set in real places

  • urban or neighborhood centered stories, including Harlem and other city spaces

  • grounded romance that respects tension, consent and complexity

  • slice of life fiction that follows work, love, care and quiet shifts in a person

  • hybrid prose and poetry projects that blur forms without losing clarity

If your work listens closely to people rather than spectacle, it may belong here.
